Entry level IPL. Modest power (36W). Three modes.
A few years ago, home IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy devices–previously primarily available to spas, were reduced in size and cost and became available for home use. Since then, a huge number of different models has become available on Amazon. The thing is, almost all these IPL devices offer the basic functionality of hair removal. Higher-end models offer such features as “ICE” active cooling and/or multiple filters for different effects. But if your focus is entirely on hair removal at the lowest price, to a large part your decision can be driven by price. Then, among these lower-priced units, it will come down to ergonomics and power. There are two basic designs for these IPL devices: Oblong or gun-shaped. I prefer the gun shape (like this one)–it’s easier to hold and control. But the oblong is OK. Button design can also vary. And power can vary. Generally, these units range from 30-60W, with the higher power (presumably) translating into more powerful flashing. This model features a flash button on top that is easily pressed when the IPL device is in your hand (see photos). This is an additional button on top for power on/off and power level.Specifics of this IPL device:** Has three modes: Hair removal (HR), skin rejuvenation (SC), and Acne (RA)** 36W power supply (mid-level)** NO ICE skin cooling functionality** LCD screen shows focus area and power level (1-5)** Oblong shape, less convenient in the hand than gun** The power cord attaches to the end of the unit (see photos)** No attachments to change the flash end shape** Rated for 999,999 flashesOperation is pretty trivial:1) Attach the power cord to the IPL device and plug it into the wall (the device is NOT battery operated–you must have it plugged in).2) Turn on the device via the power button, which is on top of the unit, next to the LCD screen3) Choose the power level to use (you have five levels, and you cycle through them by repeatedly pushing the button to the right of the power button4) Place the front end of the device against the skin you are trying to treat and push the flash button [oval button] quickly. (You can also put the device in “auto” mode, where it flashes every time it is pushed against the skin. To put it into auto mode, press and hold the flash button for a couple of seconds). There is a few second refractory periods after flashing before you can flash again.5) You can switch between modes by pressing both the power button and the flash buttonThe light is extremely powerful and could damage your eyes with continued direct exposure. Therefore, you should never look directly into the light and a cheap pair of folding protective eyeglasses are included in the box. The light is triggered by sensors in the front of the device. Using very slow-motion photography, I was able to capture a split-second (1/100th of a second) snapshot of the light (see photos). But the light duration is extremely short. You run the tool over the area where you want to remove hair and make sure you expose all the hair follicles in that region. You will not see any immediate results. The light signals your hair to stop growing, but it requires multiple treatments over several weeks before you will be expected to see results. Eventually, you should find a substantial reduction in the hair in the treated areas. In the box, you get the tool, a power cord, a pair of eye protection glasses, a cheap disposable razor, plus instructions.Unusually, this gun offers three modes: Hair removal (HR), Skin rejuvenation (SC), and Acne mode (RA). Typically, if an IPL device offers these alternate modes, it will come with additional filters that attach to the front of the gun to focus the wavelength of the light. The usefulness of these alternative modes (outside of HR) is subject to debate. But in any event, they are generally based on focusing the light into a more narrow range than that used by HR. I can’t attest to the usefulness/viability here.I was not impressed with the fit and finish of this unit. It came with numerous abrasions to the case. These don’t affect functionality, but shouldn’t appear on a new purchase.Overall, this is fine as an entry-level IPL, provided the price at the time of purchase is competitive with other entry-level options.Pros:** LCD display of flashes left and power level** Offers multiple modes (HR/SC/RA)Cons:** Lower/middle 36W power supply** Case came with numerous abrasions

Great device
First, I like that I can charge this up and pack it in my bag for when I travel and not have to worry about plugging it in while using.Easy to hold in my hand while using. Easy to understand and use right away.Does great at slowing down the hair growth rate almost within the first week of using. When I use it, I do a double pass (do it twice in one area) on the areas I’m working on. Easier to do when I’m just working on my upper lip or arm pits. Legs are a bit more to do.Does it work? It does. I will admit that I’m not consistent and even though I should be doing this about 3 times a week, I forget and only do it once. If you keep up and are good at just taking about 10 mins, for small areas, and work on that area, you’ll see faster progress.

Seems Nice
This laser hair removal device seems to work really well. It does exactly what the instructions say it will, as far as I can tell. I used the lowest intensity because my skin is pretty sensitive in a general sense, and I have not been using it long, but I am happy with it so far. They provide an instruction manual, the laser device and its cord, a disposable razor and a set of oversized sunglasses. I was pleased to see that they provided the sunglasses because it says in the instructions to use eye protection, but I had expected to find something more like a pair of goggles and, as I wear eyeglasses, I was concerned that the sunglasses wouldnât be of any use to me and that I would have to purchase goggles from a secondary source. However, the sunglasses that came with the laser hair removal device are oversized and they actually fit over my eyeglasses. Two small complaints that I have are: 1) that my laser hair removal device looks a little dingy or dinged up, so much so that I actually had the thought that it might have been used and returned cross my mind and 2) that I think the instructions could have been a little bit clearer. For example, I ran the device over my skin in a similar pattern to what I use with my razor, but I am not certain if I should be keeping it in place until the device blinks a specific number of times, or if I am doing it properly by keeping it in motion pretty much the entire time. Overall, though, my skin seems to feel pretty smooth and I have high hopes that it will have a lasting effect.Update: Not only has this device slowed my hair growth so that I can go a week or more with no shaving and still have smooth legs, whatever it does to decrease the hair growth has also decreased the swelling in my legs. So, if you or anyone you know has swelling in your/their legs and feet, this could potentially help with that. It was a very unexpected benefit!Update 2: I actually dropped this laser hair remover and it stopped working so I purchased a replacement – this same exact one, because I had been so impressed with it – but the one that I purchased quit working for no apparent reason after about seven months, during which I only needed to use it every few weeks. You may want to consider another product.
