10 reviews for Look!: A Child’s Guide to Advent and Christmas ― Part of the “Circle of Wonder” Series

Excellent resource!
This was our second book by Laura Alary to purchase, and we love both of them. Her writing style is gentle and helps draw the reader in to these holy seasons. She is very good at putting the concepts of Advent and Christmas (and their contrasts) into ideas children can understand. My kids like to find ways to incorporate what weâve read in the books into our observances, and it is very important to me to help our children understand why we do what we do in regards to our faith.

Amazing Advent book
For educators, parents and believers. This is a stunning book to prepare for Christmas. A journey through the wisdom of Advent deeply rooted in scripture and and tradition. There are many accessible ideas for children to explore to mark the waiting time. Gorgeous illustrations and exciting anticipation spring forth.

Least favorite in the series
This is my least favorite book in the series. Its a bit wordier and therefore feels much longer. I also felt the climax of the book was not as dramatic as it should have been. I also felt the way presented to practice advent was very prescribed without much flex room with things like the Jesse tree ornaments and hand print paper wreath. I wish it focused just on the advent candles and advent calendar and the anticipation of God’s salvation. Its a fine book, but a little more long winded and too many specifics in practice than I was hoping for.

Advent
This is a nice focus for Advent with some new ideas and new takes on old ideas.

An Advent Treasure!
This author also has a children’s book for Lent and Easter, Make Room. I had it first, and then she released this one for Christmas. I love her calm, writing voice, and learn a lot about honoring Advent in the home as well. Beautiful!

Very basic, intro book. Underwhelming.
I was underwhelmed by this book. A very, VERY basic look at advent. If you NEVER heard of Advent before then it might be a good starting point, but there was very little depth or interest to it.

A look at Advent for children
Look! A Child’s Guide to Advent and Christmas, written by Laura Alary and illustrated by Ann Boyajian, is a nonfiction child’s guide for the Advent Season.Alary shows children that Advent is a time to look back, a time to look around, and a time to look ahead. Included are Bible stories, hands-on children’s activities, and the encouragement of practical ways for children to reach out to those around them. This children’s guide shows the beauty of the purple and the pink of the Advent Season. The muted illustrations by Ann Boyajian also add a complementary sweetness to the book.Especially suited for children ages 7 — 10 or so, this guide offers practical ideas for pastors and Sunday school teachers to implement throughout the Advent Season as well. Look! could be read in four sections, “looking back”, “looking around”, “looking ahead”, and “Christmas” which would make a great basis for four children’s lessons during this special season of the year.I would recommend this book as a good basis for Advent lessons and preparation. I received this book from Paraclete Press in return for an honest opinion and review.

This is a lovely book with all kinds of potential for use at home, but also for worship leaders to use at church. This season I am sharing a few pages with the children each week during the story time in our Sunday service. It is helping us to explore the season of Advent by wondering about where our food comes from, sharing with our neighbours, being brave and experiencing mystery. Wholesome and biblically-rooted, I know it will get more use once I put it in the church’s library!
